Fujifilm Corrugated Summit Review

Corrugated printing. A transformation.

In December 2015, Fujifilm held a series of one-day Corrugated Summits at its UK production facility in Broadstairs, Kent. These demonstrated how investing in UV inkjet technology can help increase production flexibility, efficiency and – most importantly – profitability as well as open up new opportunities in the packaging and corrugated sectors.

UV inkjet offers a viable alternative to traditional processes for corrugated print applications as continued advances in inkjet technology change the way print is produced. As the global leader in this technology, Fujifilm is at the forefront of developments and a key summit focus was how Fujifilm’s new industry-leading inkjet platform, the Onset X Series, can add value to corrugated printing.

Valuable industry insight

Dr Sean Smyth from Smithers Pira gave a presentation on the market dynamics of corrugated packaging and display.  Relevant topics such as why corrugated board is becoming the material of choice for POS, creative display and high impact packaging, why run lengths are generally falling and why the market is naturally moving towards UV Inkjet were covered providing delegates with valuable industry insight.

A view of Fujifilm’s R&D facility established a deeper understanding of micro technology and the high specifications adhered to in order to create reliable and vibrant digital inkjet ink. A tour of Fujifilm’s award winning factory followed for a fascinating look at best practice manufacturing.

The complete UV inkjet system for sheet-fed corrugated print production

Fujifilm’s new modular system, the Onset X2  was demonstrated. Full pallets of board were printed with seamless transitions between each ultra-short job which highlighted the Onset’s fast turnaround times. Printing with Uvijet OL inks – specifically developed for corrugated applications with low odour, high gloss and crack-resistant properties – the UV inkjet process produced near-offset print quality but with stronger, more vibrant colours with a high visual impact for the finished board.

Realising not every corrugated print business is the same, Fujifilm has designed the Onset X series as a modular system consisting of three parts: printer, ink and media handling. Within each part there are multiple options so the system can be tailored to meet specific business needs.
